Model History

Replacing the E21 chassis in 1982 the E30 chassis spanned 12 years of production and overlapped its successor the E36 introduced in 1990 by 4 years.

Early models featured the 4 pot M10 and inline 6 M20 engines used in the E21. The major update for the E30 took place in 1987 where the M20 engine was fitted with Bosch Motronic injection and the M10 engine replaced with the M40 engine again utilising motronic. The chrome bumpers were also replaced with black ones in late 89 and the rear light made slightly bigger during this minor face lift.

The E30 was credited with a spacious cabin and a light curb weight, this was due to the suspension design that utilize Macpherson front struts and rear semi trailing arms. It was also the first 3 series to receive a service light indicator and warning light.

The 325i convertible was the first drop top solely built by BMW closely followed by the 320i convertible. The early E30 convertibles were converted by Baur, a coach builder located in Stuttgart credited with early full factory authorization BMW convertibles (1602, 2002 and E21s). To strengthen the chassis and reduce scuttle shake BMW added plates to the front suspension turrets and built in chassis beams down the length of the car helping to reduce flex or twist in the chassis after removing the metal roof.

A firm favourite with BMW enthusiasts the E30s shape is a timeless classic sure to be admired for another 20 years.

Equipment

Electric Mirrors, Electric windows. Optional extras: ABS, On board computer, Cruise control, Mud flaps.

Exterior

The paint work on this 320i is superb, it has a very deep shine that brings the Zinnoberrot red to life. The chrome work is in excellent condition as are all the grills having only had to cover very limited mileage per year. Being red, a convertible and that classic E30 shape the car looks fantastic out on the open road.

Interior

The car has the checked cloth recaro interior which is in remarkable condition, there are no wear marks to any of the seats. It has the optional on board computer which replaces the standard clock and also has the very rare option of cruise control.

Engine & Transmission

The car has been looked after the whole of its life by the same BMW main dealer and has only covered 23,717 miles so as you would expect the engine, gearbox and suspension still feel nice and tight.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

The car is fitted with the standard 14" alloys, we have just had all 4 refurbished and finished off with new chrome centre caps and wheel bolts. All the tyres have a hefty amount of tread and are matching Goodyears all around. In 2007 the car received new brake pads and hoses at BMW.

History File

This BMW has only had one owner from new who has always had it serviced by the same BMW dealer. The original bill of sale is included stating all the optional extras and the original purchase price of £19,230 back in 1989. Despite only covering 23,717 miles it has a total of 18 BMW main dealer stamps in the original service book, all these stamps are backed up with the receipts detailing the work that was carried out at each service. The timing belt was changed in 2005. Along with the original service book all the other manuals are still with the history file. The car has had a documented clock change at 6125 in the first two years of its life therefore the replacement clocks now show less than 18K.
