Fiat Bertone X1/9 IN | £6,995
Mileage: 12950Model History
The Fiat X1/9 was first shown in 1969 as a concept car called the Autobianchi A112 Runabout. It took the all-new 128 SOHC engine and gearbox from the front engined, front wheel drive Fiat 128 and mounted it in the rear of the soon to be X1/9 giving a mid engined layout. This resulted in the first affordable mid engined sports car with tremendous handling and dynamic qualities which some reviews referred to as 'the baby Ferrari'.
Early models featured a free revving 75bhp 1300cc engine until replacement in 1979 with a 1500cc engine coupled with a 5 speed gearbox giving the quirky wedge improved performance that better matched the cars weight.
The cars monocoque body was produced at the Bertone factory then transported across town to the Fiats Lingotto factory for installation of the engine and final assembly. Fiat handed the complete build to Bertone in 1982 (Fiat wanted to stop production but Bertone wanted to continue) all further models were subsequently badged the Bertone X1/9. To celebrate this change Bertone build a special edition badged the 'IN' believed to stand for 'In Vogue or In Style'. Introduced in the Spring of 1982 the model was characterised by two tone paint and IM badged on the roll bar. The interior went through a full make over using high quality materials resulting in a red carpet, 'IN' badged leather seats, steering wheel and a plaque on the dash denoting the build number and Mr Nuccio Bertones signature.
This little X1/9 has been putting a smile on the face of all visitors to 4 Star at present. For a classic original sales videos follow this link: X1/9 promo video

Exterior
With a genuine 13,000 miles this little Fiat is in fantastic original condition. It was owned by the same family for the first 26 years of its life and then by an enthusiast for the last 2 years. It's always been kept garaged and waxoyled so is completely rust free. All the special ‘IN' two tone paint and stickers appear to be original with only a couple of small age related marks.
Interior
What a great period interior, you can't get more 80's than this! The red leather seats are in perfect condition with no wear whatsoever , all the switch gear works as it should and its fitted with some tailored over mats. Ready for that weekend away it has some factory option overnight bags in the boot!
Engine & Transmission
The current owner has looked after the car very well, and has addressed every minor issue to get it running perfectly. A cam belt service was carried out in 2008 so the car now wants for nothing, other than some summer day drives. As you would expect with the low mileage the gearbox is a joy to use as its very light and precise and moves easily through the gears. The clutch and slave cylinder have been replaced in 2008.
Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
The X1/9 is fitted with the factory 13" alloys with nearly new Firestone tyres all round. The brakes have been fully overhauled with new callipers, disks, pads and master cylinder in 2008.
History File
The original bill of sale still remains in the history stating a purchase price of £7306.89 in 1982, the original Bertone document pouch is also present with service book, owner's manual, all other original booklets and several old MOT certificates.
The X1/9 was originally bought by a Mr Pleece as a gift for his wife, she did not get on with the car that well so it only had limited use. On her death the ownership was transferred into Mr Pleece's name and the subsequently into his granddaughters name. In 2008 with a growing Family she sold the car to the current owner who is a member of the X1/9 owners club. He has spent a considerable amount of money getting the mechanics of the car 100% all of which is documented in the history file. There are also two original sales brochures, various articles with information on X1/9's and a copy of the X1/9's owner's club technical articles.
