Model History

The 205 GTI had everything when new, and still does - sharp handling, light weight for added chuckability and an unburstable engine that sings the more you rev it.

Ever since the first 1.6-litre 205 GTI went on sale in April 1984, the eulogies to the car have appeared thick and fast. With 105bhp on tap from its all-alloy 1580cc four-pot, superb handling and reasonable build quality (they can be a bit flimsy), the 205 GTI soon became a favourite with the motoring press and car buyers. Sometimes owners got a bit carried away and overcooked it on the bends, sometimes those who pranged the car had ‘borrowed' it without asking, but everyone who drove it reckoned the Pug was one of the best drives available - at any money.

In 1985 Peugeot's barking mad 205 T16 rally car won the World Rally Championship, and in 1986 the convertible 205 GTI went on sale, neatly badged the CTI. Peugeot where on the crest of a wave with their small hatch.

Things got even more fun - and more easily out of shape - when the 1.9 litre car arrived in January 1987, with 130bhp and disk brakes all round. So it wasn't overshadowed by its bigger brother, tweaks to the cylinder head and camshaft in 1987 meant power for the 1.6-litre car rose to 115bhp and in the following year a new dashboard was fitted with higher quality interior trim, including a leather-trimmed steering wheel.

In 1991 the CTI was fitted with the 1905cc engine and a catalytic converter. In 1992 catalytic converters had to be fitted to all cars to meet legislation, lowering the power output to 122bhp on the 1.9 car. At the same time anti lock brakes and air conditioning became an option. The 1.6 205 GTI bit the dust in August 1991, while its bigger brother lasted until April 1994, when the 205 range was replaced with the rather sedate and uninvolving 206.

Equipment

Front fog lights, half leather interior, leather steering wheel, radio cassette player, electric windows, GTI floor mats.

Exterior

This little Peugeot 205 GTI has been treasured by its first owner for the last 20 years, it has been kept in a dry garage and only used on dry sunny days. There is not a single dent anywhere and certainly no rust or scratches. Due to the car never seeing rain the underside is nearly as clean as the top! The white paint is still gleaming and there is no fading or damage to any of the plastic trim or body kit. Being ultra critical there are a couple of very small stone chips to the leading edge of the bonnet. A couple of years ago all the lights where replaced with new item to keep it looking factory fresh. It is the more desirable non sunroof model which results in a better drive and no chance of any leaks if you do take it out in the rain.

Interior

You would certainly expect a car with such low mileage to have a very clean interior but this is something else, it really does feel like new! It still has the original GTI over mats covering the perfect red carpet, the passenger and rear seats look like they have never been sat in and the drivers only has the tiniest amount of creasing to the leather. It's the later car with the much improved dash and trim, none of which is broken or damaged and there are no squeaks or rattling when you drive the car. Again the boot looks like it has never had anything in it, there are none of the normal scratches to the paint or plastic boot trims. The original Clarion Peugeot radio cassette is still there in good working order. Even the key feels like new.

Engine & Transmission

The engine fires into life on the first turn of the key and idles smoothly with none of the normal Peugeot rattling noises. It has been serviced at least every 6,000 miles and had the timing belt and water pump changed at 30,218 miles. The gearbox is tight and precise with no play in the gear shift selector.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

The original 1.9 15" alloys are in perfect condition without a single scratch or curb mark, they are shod in brand new Michelin Pilot tyres in the correct 185/55/15 size. Being the 1.9 GTI it has disk brakes all round that are both powerful and responsive, the disks where replaced last year and less than 1000 miles ago.

History File

This 205 was first registered in October 1989 and purchased by a Mr Gwyn Parry who kept the car till April of 2009. The next keeper kept the car for 6 months before selling it on to the current owner, a collector. The original document wallet is still with the car with the owners guide, hand book, maintenance book, cassette player instructions and service book. There are 7 stamps in the service book and a stack of service receipts showing work that has been carried out over the years.
