Model History

The original Volkswagen Beetle spanned an incredible production period of 65 years from 1938 to 2003, over 21 million Beetles were produced in all.

The car was originally known as 'Kafer' the German word for "Beetle" and it was not until 1967 that Volkswagen themselves began using the name "Beetle" in marketing material, previously it had been known as the "Type 1".

In 1933 Ferdinand Porsche was commissioned to develop the 'Peoples cars', a car capable of transporting two adults and three children at 62mph. Initially called the Porsche Type 60 it morphed into the type 1 Beetle.

Not that we have tried it but the Beetles period advertising suggested it was nearly water tight and would float for a few minutes minutes on the water!

The Beetle went about many upgrades in its life, the final evolution in 1971 known as the Super Beetle or VW 1302 and in 1973 the introduction of the VW 1303. The 1303 introduced a more aerodynamically curved windscreen due to US department of transportation regulations. This allowed for a redesigned dashboard, A 2-speed heater fan, higher rear mudguards and larger rear tail lights.

The Beetle convertible was introduced in 1949 by Karmann in Osnabruck. Wihelm Karmann bought a VW Beetle converted it then presented it to VW in the hope of winning some work. After successfully winning over the board in 1949 the last of 331,847 cabriolets rolled off the production line in 1980.

Equipment

Immobiliser, radio, body coloured wheels, chrome exhaust trims

Exterior

Imported in 1986 this Beetle has a solid body that has never been welded or repaired. The paint work is in very good condition the only mark being a small scuff on the rear wheel arch. The hood looks like it has recently been replaced.

Interior

The interior is clean and tidy with no rips or tears. There is an immobiliser and radio fitted.

Engine & Transmission

The car received a brand new complete 1600 Remtec engine supplied by VW heritage and fitted in 2008 at a cost of over 3K. The engine trundles along nicely as Beetles do and the gearbox changes as it should.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

The body coloured wheels are in great condition with good tyres and tread. The front discs and pads replaced in June along with a fresh brake fluid flush and a new battery.
