BMW 2002 Turbo | £25,995
Mileage: 47143Model History
The most sort after new class saloon is the 2002 Turbo. Introduced at the Frankfurt motorshow in 1973 the Turbo had only a short production period which came to an abrupt halt in 1975 due to the Seventies oil crisis. Only 1672 units were produced.
Made in only two colours, Chamonix white and Polaris silver. The body had no front bumper but a large front spoiler, bolt on wheel arches and a boot spoiler. It was then finished off with the tri-colour M stripes and a large turbo badge stuck on the back. The press cars had "2002" and "turbo" added to the front spoiler in reverse script so any car in front would know exactly what had just appeared in their rear view mirror. The Press had a field day with this calling the firm 'irresponsible" and so the stickers were dropped on production models however most ended up with them anyway.
The engine was based on the 2L 2002tii unit with the addition of a Kuhnle, Kopp and Kausch turbocharger mounted low on the right hand side. The location of the turbo meant there was no room for an air conditioning condenser or a RHD steering column. Compression was lowered to 6.9:1 to prevent detonation. Camshaft timing was the same as the tii along with the Kugelfischer fuel injection but with a major change to the injection pump to compensate for throttle valve position and boost pressure of the "abgasturbolader".
The clutch and steering are heavier than the tii and a 40% limited slip differential was standard. There was an optional 5 speed Getrag close ratio gearbox.
The interior featured black sport seats and a red plastic panel fitted around the instrument cluster just in case you needed reminding you were in something sporty!. A boost gauge and clock sit neatly on the dash but no oil pressure or temperature gauge.

Equipment
Getrag 5 Speed 'Dogleg' manual, 2-Piece Gotti magnesium alloy wheels, boost gauge, clock, front spoiler, boot spoiler, bolt on wheel arches, sports seats, green tinted windscreen, heated rear window.
Exterior
The body of this turbo is in excellent condition after spending the majority of its life in the warm, dry climate of Italy. After careful inspection under the body we are pleased to report that it is in immaculate condition and no doubt in similar condition to how it came out of the factory, minus the under seal.
The paint work is in superb condition complimented by very good chrome work and immaculate rubbers, grills, stickers and badges. Even the bung for the towing eye in the front spoiler is present and a genuine BMW item. The only blemish on the body being a small area of corrosion on the bottom of the drivers side front wing.
The car still retains its original green tinted windscreen with the starting instruction sticker still present
Interior
The interior is perfect. The car has a very rare original 150mph UK Turbo speedo fitted, surrounded by a recently refurbished red dash insert. The seats are in 'as new' condition with no wear or tears. There is a set of period floor mats protecting the carpet.
Engine & Transmission
After being imported into the UK the car has had extensive work on the engine to bring it up to top condition all of which has been detailed in a large and extensive history file. In particular during 2007 the engine underwent a full head rebuild using the correct sodium filled exhaust valves. The headgasket, head bolts and other associated gaskets have all been replaced using genuine BMW original equipment. During this time the K27 turbo charger was replaced with another new K27 unit all of which is documented in the service history with invoices and pictures.
The engine accelerates in typical Turbo style with not a lot below 4000rpm then a big whoosh of power and you're off. MJF engineering has checked over the engine giving it the all clear but has suggested it would benefit from additional work replacing a couple of leaking gaskets.
The 5 speed dogleg gearbox selects its gears when done smoothly but does not liked to be rushed suggesting it might benefit from an overhaul in the near future.
The car has a custom made stainless steel exhaust and a genuine new smaller fuel tank from the tii to increase boot space for longer trips away.
Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
This turbo has very rare 2-Piece Gotti magnesium alloy wheels that were available only on Italian cars. The alloys are in good condition with no curb marks and wrapped in good tyres with plenty of tread.
History File
Chassis number 4290386 was manufactured on April 22nd, 1974 and delivered on May 3rd, 1974 to the BMW importer Bavaria Societa Importazioni e Vendite S.pA in Palazzole/Verona. The car found its way into an Italian car collection in Pescara until a bulk of cars were sold. The turbo was spotted for sale by Mr Richard Stern, founder and chairman of the "02 register". After careful inspection the car was purchased in 2006 and imported into the UK where it underwent extensive work to bring it up to Mr Sterns high standards, all of which has been carefully documented in the service history. The car has won serveral show awards in the hands of Mr Stern.
