Model History

The R107 chassis replaced the now highly sought after W113 SL chassis or 'pagoda' in 1972. The R107 was produced in two variants the SL and SLC, the SL being a 2 seater convertible roadster with a soft top and removable hard top.

Being one of the second longest chassis series that Mercedes have produced there are plenty of engine choices and variants to choose from. The 420SL was produced from 1985-1989 and replaced the 380SL supplying the driver with the same amount of horsepower but with a healthy increase in torque.

The real benefit for the model was the comprehensive updates that were carried out and fitted to post 1985 cars to bring them up to the then current modern standards. These included reworked suspension and anti roll bars resulting in a more controlled ride, large 4 pot front brake calipers increased the cars braking ability, a limited differential as added and quite a few front end parts were borrowed from the newly introduced W124 series. The front and rear bumpers were updated along with a hefty amount of body sheet metal changes then finished with the new door handles from the w126 series and a set of light alloy wheels similar to the w201 chassis.

Exterior

When this car arrived with us there was a small amount of rust on the bottom of the front wings so we have had them replaced with new items. There was also a small blister on the aluminium bonnet and a scratch on the boot so we decided to have the car fully stripped and re-sprayed in the original Polar white. The soft top is in perfect working order with no damage or wear to the fabric or plastic windows. It also has the factory hard top which is finished in a contrasting dark blue. The underside of the car is straight showing no signs of accident damage or corrosion.

Interior

The interior is in great condition with none of the usual wear on the seat bolsters. Being a Mercedes there are no rattles and everything works as it should. The last owner has upgraded the stereo and fitted a 10 disk changer and amplifier in the boot giving a fantastic sound.

Engine & Transmission

The 420SL has a beautifully smooth V8 that gives effortless performance, but surprisingly is quite fuel efficient compared with the 500SL. This car comes with a full service history comprising of 18 stamps in the original service book; which are all Mercedes dealers or Mercedes Specialists. The 4 speed automatic gearbox works as it should providing a smooth change through the gears. We have just done a full service on the car, replacing fluids, filters and spark plugs.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

This car was supplied new with 15" alloy wheels which have been fully refurbished and are fitted with matching Dunlop tyres with plenty of tread. It has disk brakes all round and benefits from ABS, all of which is in good working order.

History File

Supplied new by Mercedes-Benz in Woking the pre delivery check was carried out on the 03/04/1987, the car then registered on 15/05/1987 and delivered to its first owner. The same dealer then had the car back after its running in stage at 1169 miles and then continued to look after the car for the next 10 years with 9 stamps in the book. With a change of owner Auto-Merc in London took over the servicing and looked after the car for the next 5 years with 5 more stamps in the book. For the last few years it has been looked after by a couple of different Mercedes Specialists and one major service by a Mercedes dealer in 04. There is a wallet full of service receipts detailing all the recent work, plus most of the MOT certificates. Along with its original service book there is the leather dealer wallet with all owner's manuals and driver guides. There are 4 owners showing on the V5 and one of these changes is due to a private number plate change.
