Model History

The R107 chassis replaced the now highly sought after W113 SL chassis or 'pagoda' in 1972. The R107 was produced in two variants the SL and SLC, the SL being a 2 seater convertible roadster with a soft top and removable hard top.

The SLs defined personal luxury cars for almost 2 decades (1972-1989) and were powered by eight different engines in that time.

The engine in the 380SL was a new all-aluminium 3.8Litre V8 introduced in 1981 to replace the 4.5Litre V8. This was part of an efficiency program in which Mercedes re-tuned the V8 engines for greater efficiency. 1981 also saw the W107 gain a small upgrade in the form of a 4 speed auto gearbox replacing the 3 speed with ABS added to the range a year earlier.

Built at a time when engineers ruled at Mercedes rather than the accountants the R107 chassis was built to a standard rather than a price. It was built for 18 years for a very good reason and one that will become more and more appreciated as time goes on.

Equipment

ABS, power assisted steering, electric windows, central locking, 14" alloy wheels, removable winter hard top, front fog lights, upgraded CD player.

Exterior

The body is very straight with no parking dents, as with most 27 year old cars it has had some paintwork in the past but there is no evidence of any poor workmanship. All the chrome work is in excellent condition. The soft top has recently been replaced and is in perfect working order, with no damage or wear to the fabric or plastic windows. It also has the factory hard top which is finished in the same colour as the rest of the car. The underside is good showing no signs of accident damage or corrosion common on the early W107s.

Interior

The interior is in great condition with none of the usual wear on the seat bolsters. Being a Mercedes there are no rattles and everything works as it should. The car has Mercedes rubber over mats that have kept the carpets in as new condition.

Engine & Transmission

The 380SL has a beautifully smooth V8 that gives effortless performance. This car comes with a full service history comprising of 25 stamps in the original service book. The 4 speed automatic gearbox works well providing a smooth change through the gears.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

This car was supplied new with 14" alloy wheels which are all in good condition and the tyres have plenty of tread. It benefits from disk brakes all round with minimal wear and in good working order.

History File

Supplied new on the 1st August 1983 the car had its running in inspection the following month with 1027 miles on the clock. There are then a further 24 stamps in the original service book backed up with a file full of receipts. The last service was carried out in April of this year at 93,932 miles. To further verify the history and genuine mileage every one of the 21 MOT certificates have been kept in the history file along with every previous tax disk! The current owner has had the car for 4 years with 5 previous owners showing on the log book, one of which was the previous dealer. The car is of course HPI clear.
