The E30 M3 made its debut at the 1985 Frankfurt motor show and was a BMW motorsport division development based on the E30 3 Series. The reason for the development was to allow BMW to compete in Group A touring car racing against the likes of the Mercedes 190E 2.3 16V Cosworth, for some excellent footage of this racing follow this link to one of our favourite youtube videos - Touring car racing 1980s.
Group A rules demanded that each race car share its main components with the production road car, hence the wide arches to accommodate race wheels and tyres. The series required a high number of units to homologate the M3 (5000 units), so production was carried out by special teams at the normal Munich-Milbertshofe factory rather than the Motorsport unit in Garching.
While based on the E30 3 series, the M3 was a totally revised car designed and focused for use as a race car. The suspension was reworked resulting in three times more steering castor, a front anti rollbar linked to the struts, re-valved shocks and stiffer shorter springs, a wider track and stronger wheel bearings were added to cope with intense mechanical stress of track work. The power assisted rack and pinion steering is quicker (19.6:1). All the exterior panels on the M3 apart from the bonnet and sunroof are unique to the car with the rear screen re-angled for better airflow. Both front and rear screens are bonded in to the car to increase body stiffness.
The M3 weighed a mere 1200kgs and coupled with the cars immense handling and driving behaviour it is no surprise that BMW had no problem selling all 5000 units.

Exterior
This special E30 M3 has had a pampered life kept garaged under cover by its current owner for the last 9 years. He has a keen attention to detail and the car presents in near perfect condition and has won several concourse events. The paintwork is amazing and almost completely free of any chips or marks and has a deep lustful shine protected by many coats of wax. All of the plastic trim and rubber seals are immaculate and the car still comes with its original dealer number plates and rear window sticker.
Interior
This example is correctly spec'd with the optional Recaro sports seats and is true to its race origins without the extra weight of a sunroof and electric windows. The car still hold onto that fresh new car smell and the interior is in first rate order, all of the fabric is excellent with no fading or sagging and all of the dash and plastic trim are immaculate with no signs of age. The boot looks unused with the spare and jack under the carpet and a complete tool kit with the BMW duster.
Engine & Transmission
Looking under the bonnet gives you a real understanding how this car came to win concours, it is immaculate, but not in an over dressed fashion, more factory original. The car has been meticulously maintained with genuine BMW parts and as such is mechanically excellent.
Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
The car sits on the 16" wheel option that fills those famous box arches perfectly, they are all perfect and shod in a new set on Continental tyres.
History File
The current BMW Club owner has had this as his prized possession for the last 9 years and there are only 2 previous keepers. The original service book is up to date with a total of 24 entries, this is further backed up with a thick file full of service and parts invoices. There is also a box file full of magazine articles on the E30 M3 and some winning certificates and a trophy from Concours competitions. The car also comes with all the spare keys.
