Model History

Typewriters or fast cars, this was the choice for young Burkard, son of the German Bovensiepen family that by trade made typewriters. This was back in 1960s when in the face of a disapproving German Automotive manufacturing industry Burkard established Alpina, a BMW tuning business.

Tinkering with carburettors and cylinder heads Burkard had success with the then current BMW 1500 range in 1963 and by 1965 Alpina had a turnover of 200K and seven employees.

Alpina really established itself from 1968 with a hugely successful racing career that spanned 9 winning years, the highlight being 1970 in which Alpina team cars won the electrifying European touring car championship, the German hill climbing championship and the prestigious Spa 24 hour race. Legendary race drivers Derek Bell, Niki Lauda and Hans Stuck have all raced Alpina prepared BMW 2002s and CS coupes during their racing careers.

Since 1970 Alpina have had TUV status allowing them to build and register cars as Alpina rather than under the BMW badge. All Alpina cars can still be bought through BMW dealerships and still fall inside BMWs warranty scheme, a testament to Alpinas engineering achievement and ability.

The Alpina B10 V8 was first introduced in 1997 and was the first Alpina to be based on the E39 platform. For this model Alpina cast a complete new 4.6 litre engine block to replace the 4.4 litre found in the BMW 540i on which it was based. Other engine modifications included lighter high-compression Mahle pistons, a new crankshaft and a reprogrammed Motronic computer system. The result of these modifications was an increase of nearly 60 bhp over the standard engine. Alpina also equipped new ventilated disc brakes all around, twin-tube gas pressure shocks, new anti-roll bars and 18 inch Alpina alloy wheels.

Equipment

Multi-function steering wheel, Communications pack (wide screen sat nav, TV function, Motorola phone), Front and rear airbags, Cruise control, Orthopedic seats, Electronic steering wheel adjustment, Climate control, Electric sunroof, Auto-dim mirror, Front and rear parking sensors, Rear window blinds, Electric memory seats, Alpina embossed steering wheel, Alpina over-mats, Alpina front spoiler, Tool kit, Spare alloy wheel.

Exterior

This striking B10 has led a pampered life and presents beautifully with arrow straight flanks and a deep glossy shine, the paint is almost perfect with only a dusting of light chips to the front spoiler and bonnet. The body is completely free of rust with no evidence of the dreaded tin worm in any of the usual E39 weak spots. Another point to mention is all the black trims that run around the windows are also free from corrosion which can also be a problem on this model. All of the glass is free from chips and the xenon lights are crystal clear.

Interior

The interior of this Alpina is a very special place to enjoy a drive with the excellent orthopaedic sports seats and lashings of hide and top quality materials, even the centre console is trimmed in leather. The seats are in first rate condition with no signs of wear to the bolsters and the backs look never sat in, there are no scuffs to any of the trim and all the functions and controls have been checked and are working well. The boot area is spotless and the carpet throughout the car is protected with an immaculate set of Alpina floor mats. The Alpina placque can also be found stating the build number 149/1.

Engine & Transmission

The engine bay is very clean and the car has just been fully inspected and has now passed with the only advisories being adjustment to the gear knob cable and a set of new rear pads. The B10 has also recently benefited from a new battery and radiator.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

The alloys have all been recently refurbished inside and out. The rear tyres have just been replaced due to a puncture and the fronts have an average of 5mm of tread remaining. The brakes show minimal wear and do an excellent job of pulling the Alpina to rest quickly.

History File

Included with the car is the original document holder with all the owner's manuals and the service book. The book is up to date with 7 entries, the last being for an inspection 1 service at 44k miles. Naturally the car is HPI clear and it has also just passed our multi point inspection with only a couple of minor advisories.
