Audi B5 RS4 | £13,995
Mileage: 83,688Model History
The Audi B5 RS4 was introduced by Audi in late 1999, as the successor to the Audi RS2 Avant. The vehicle, like its RS2 predecessor, was available only as an Avant and was built on an existing platform, in this case the Volkswagen Group B5 platform shared with the A4 and S4. Although related to the Audi B5 S4, many of the outer body panels were altered, with wider front and rear wheel arches to allow for the wider axle track on the RS4. With unique front and rear bumpers and side sills and the rear spoiler from the S4 Avant not only did the RS4 look the part but the aerodynamic modifications achieved a drag coefficient of Cd 0.34.
The engine was developed from the 2.7 litre 90° V6 'biturbo' used in the B5 S4. It displaced 2,671 cubic centimetres and had five valves per cylinder. This engine was developed and manufactured in the UK by Cosworth Technology. It featured enlarged intake and smaller exhaust ports on the two Cosworth cast aluminium alloy cylinder heads, two parallel BorgWarner K04-series turbochargers, two larger side-mounted intercoolers, dished piston crowns, stronger connecting rods, larger intake ducting, enlarged exhaust system and a re-calibrated engine management system. The modifications increased the engine's output from 261 bhp and 295 lbft of torque in S4 to a mighty 375 bhp 325 lbft of torque.
Even with a kerb weight weight of 1,620 kilograms the RS4's powerful engine gave it exhilarating performance with 60mph coming up in 4.9 seconds. Top speed was electronically limited to 162.8 mph.
Brakes were also developed jointly in house by Audi's quattro GmbH, not by Porsche as with its predecessor, the RS2. At the front they were radially vented and floating cast iron discs, 360 millimetres diameter and 32 millimetres thick with double-piston floating calipers and at the rear 312 millimeters by 22 millimetres discs with a single-piston floating caliper. The RS4 needed less than 50 metres to come to a full stop from a speed of 68mph.
Audi produced 6,030 units between 1999 and 2001 of which only approxmately 400 examples were RHD.
Equipment
Electric heated Recaro seats, Bose stereo, Audi Symphony, Carbon interior trim, Luggage cover, Digital climate control, Traction control, Arm rest, Alluminium roof rails
Exterior
This B5 RS4 is finished in Avus silver that displays a pearlescent tint and wraps itself around the wide and aggressive stance of the RS4 specific wide front and rear arches and unique bumpers and side skirts. The paintwork on this example is excellent and virtually free from any swirl marks, chips or scratches, true to its estate car nature the only noticeable mark being around the load area on the back bumper. It's arrow straight down both sides and all of the plastic and rubber trim are free from damage or fading.
Interior
The interior is a great place to be with body hugging heated Recaro seats and the Audi Symphony stereo system. The leather is in first rate order with no signs of wear or sagging to the bolsters and all of the door cards free from scratches. The dash is lifted with smart carbon fibre trim and all of the switch gear works as it should. The boot area is exceptionally clean and comes with the handy luggage cover and tools.
Engine & Transmission
The engine bay is draped in carbon fibre engine covers, hiding the potent turbo charged engine but displaying the 4 ring logo and a message of what's lurking underneath. Exceptionally clean, the power unit has only been serviced from new by the main dealer with 9 stamps in the book. This example has avoided any modifications and drives exactly as Audi intended. The bi-turbo engine provides a smooth refined drive but when provoked provides a satisfying surge of torque and acceleration that rivals even the fastest sports cars but can at the same time scare the dog.
Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
The classic RS4 specific alloys have all just been refurbished to an excellent standard and are shod in a matching set of Pirelli P-Zero tyres, the fronts with 5mm of tread and 4mm on the rear. New centre caps have been fitted and the brakes show minimal wear and do an excellent job of pulling the car up quickly in a straight line.
History File
This RS4 was first registered by the supplying dealer in November 2000 and remained in the hands of one owner until only recently. Throughout its life it has always been serviced at the Audi main dealer with a total of 9 stamps in the original service book. The last service was carried out in February 2012 at 77,481 miles.
The leather owners pack is still with the car and contains all the owners guides, some old MOT's, invoices, a clear HPI report and all the old tax discs.
