Model History

The Mini, a British icon of the 1960s, a legend in its own right that influenced a generation of car manufacturers. The Mini was considered the British equivalent to its German contemporary the Volkswagen Beetle. It has earned its place in the history books and in 1999 was credited the second most influential car of the 20th Century behind the Ford Model T, not bad going for the little front wheel drive pocket rocket.

It was the compact design and space saving front wheel drive layout that allowed 80% of the cars floor plan to be used for passengers and luggage, they even put the door hinges on the outside to aid the simple compact design. This layout was a first for car manufacturers and introduced at a time when sales of large cars was on a rapid decline and small German bubble cars were booming. Production ranged from its introduction in 1959 until the final car rolled off the production line in 2000. An incredible 41 years of production that spawned many models of Mini targeting various different markets.

It was John Cooper, owner of the Cooper car company and designer and builder of Formula one and rally cars that saw potential for the Mini in competition. After a whole host of upgrades the Mini Cooper debuted in 1961 followed shortly after in 1963 by the Mini Cooper S which enjoyed victory in the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 65 and 67.

Equipment

Driver and passenger mirrors, Fresh Air Heater.

Exterior

This late 1967 Mk1 Austin Mini Cooper remains in original condition and is presented as a barn find. Taken off the road in 1983 due to a faulty fuel pump it has remained stationary in a large dry barn for nearly 30 years. There is very little rust and only a minor amount of welding carried out to some of the wheel arches. The webasto roof is still in operation and fitted from new.

Interior

The interior is in staggering condition considering its age. Totally original the seats are free from rips or any excessive wear having been covered by additional seat covers from new. The interior colour accentuates the sporty red exterior, the red carpets the only real item showing their age but remaining original. The jack and wheel brace are still present along with the spare wheel.

Engine & Transmission

The original engine is still fitted and after careful and sympathetic testing, it turns over with no problem. The fuel pump is missing and the cause for it coming off the road in 1984.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

The michelin XZX tyres wrap around the Coopers wheels and retain a date stamp of 1984.

History File

Supplied new in 1967 to Mrs Crowe, this Mini was a present from her late husband. First registered to his company, a solicitors in Harrow, London the Mini was thoroughly enjoyed by its one lady owner right up until its fuel pump failure and subsequent storage in 1984.

The original green registration booklet is present showing the first registration on the 4th Aug 1967. This lists the owner, chassis and engine details and the road tax excise duty at £17.10 for 12 months. The subsequent white V5 document then the current red V5 documents are all present.

There is a British Motor Industry Heritage confirming the cars build and its current originality along with an original Austin Mini handbook and workshop manual.

All of the MOT certificates are available starting in 1973 right up until 1983, its last test.
