The Mercedes W126 was the second generation of their luxury flagship model to bear the name of the S-class or 'sonderklasse' translated as the 'Special class'. The model had a production period of 12 years, stretching from 1979 to 1991, the longest run of any S-class since it's introduction in the 1950s. The W126 was initially offered in a straight-6, V8, or turbo diesel saloon model. In September 1981, 2-door coupe versions of the W126 were introduced. Compared to its predecessor, the W126 was more aerodynamic, fuel efficient, capacious, and powerful.
Following the oil crisis of the 1970s, Mercedes made fuel efficiency a top priority for it's engines. They wanted to make sure that the S-class retained its name as the best selling luxury car, so also set about by improving the ride and handling. It was however the safety, comfort and technological features that set the S-class apart in its day. Airbags, seat belt pretensioners, traction control, ABS and crumple zones were all advancements in their day, and combined with the comfort features of courtesy lights, climate control, duel stage heated front seats and courtesy lights on the bottom of the doors, these helped to set the W126 apart from other luxury cars of the time.

Finished with only the best leather available at the time, this 'Special class' must have felt every bit that back in 1985. Fully electric heated memory seats allow the driver or passenger to be seduced into total comfort. The electric functions of the windows and sunroof are available to control the inside cabin temperature manually or the optional and uprated automatic climate control system with air conditioning. There is no need to even reach for the front seat belts as they're automatically handed to you by the car. Stop for some cold refreshments and the car provides just that, with a Mercedes fitted Engel boot fridge stowed neatly in the boot!
Engine & Transmission
The 5L V8 is in fine condition and has been treated to a lifetime of Mercedes main dealer services from day one. With a recent overhaul the car is running as well as it did when new, providing performance or total luxury cruising. The 4 speed automatic changes through the gears as it should and wafts the car along with a seamless motion.
Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
The standard light weight alloy wheels are in excellent condition with not a mark or scuff in sight. The rear tyres look almost new with plenty of tread left on the fronts. The spare wheel looks unused and still bares its original Mercedes sticker. The brakes work as they should pulling the car to a controlled and effortless stop.
