Model History

The BMW 8 series first made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1989. Produced after the E24 6 series the 8 was a completely new BMW coupe class in its own with an increase in performance and a considerably higher price tag.

 

The design and development of the 8 Series began in 1986 and reportedly cost BMW over 1.5 billion Deutschemark. The all-new streamline body style was designed using the latest CAD tools computer program, which has since become widely used in the design and development process for many manufacturers. Combined with wind tunnel testing, the 8 series had a drag coefficient of 0.29, a huge improvement from the previous BMW models. The 8 Series was also one of BMW's first cars, along with the Z1, to use a multi-link rear axle.

 

Originally there was an 830i prototype which did not reach production. Intended as a potential entry-level model, only eighteen cars were ever produced as the model was dropped in favor of the more powerful 840Ci and almost all of the 18 cars were dismantled with only one remaining in a BMW museum.

 

The 840Ci was produced with two different engine variants, the first used the 4 litre M60 engine and was produced from mid 1993 to late 1995. From mid-1995, production started with the newer 4.4 litre M62 engine, that returned better fuel economy and more torque despite the brake horsepower output remaining unchanged. The 840 was available with a 5-speed automatic transmission and an optional 6-speed manual transmission for Europe only.

Exterior

Finished in a rare shade of Barbados Green Metallic, this 840 Ci Sport is in pristine condition. Unspoilt by any modifications or poor paintwork, it remains in near new condition with such minimal mileage. The BMW individual light green/blue metallic paintwork perfectly suits the coupes streamline body shape and muscular M Sport bodywork. All of the light clusters remain crack free and clean, as do the rubber door mouldings and window trim.

Interior

The light parchment leather is in excellent condition, it covers the interior beautifully in a two tone colour scheme. There are lashings of hand stitched leather covering the door cards and centre console, contrasting perfectly with the smooth and pristine Individual roof lining. The ergonomics of the drivers cockpit is perfectly designed, cocooning and supplying the driver directly with all instrumentation within an arms reach.

Engine & Transmission

Serviced by its supplying dealer in its early life and recently recommissioned after a period in storage, the engine is in fine fettle and fires into action immediately before settling to a beautiful V8 burble. The smooth automatic gearbox shifts through the changes effortlessly when asked to at slow speed or at a swifter pace.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

The cross spoke alloy wheels are in perfect condition having recently been refurbished. They provide the car with a more aggressive stance over the standard wheels with their deep lip design and help to identify the 'Sport' spec. The tyres have plenty of tread, the rear continental tyres providing plenty of grip to handle the V8 power.

History File

Supplied new by BMW main dealer Bravarian Garages Northern Ireland, this 840Ci has remained in the possession of only one family. The original purchase invoice is still present with some early inspection sheets from the supplying dealer and a more recently a major service and brake fluid change completed in November 12.

 

All the MOT certificates including SORN certificates are present to back up the genuine low mileage. Both keys can be found as well as the original owners handbook and document holder.
