Model History

The 205 GTI had everything when new, and still does - sharp handling, light weight for added chuckability and an unburstable engine that sings the more you rev it.

Ever since the first 1.6-litre 205 GTI went on sale in April 1984, the eulogies to the car have appeared thick and fast. With 105bhp on tap from its all-alloy 1580cc four-pot, superb handling and reasonable build quality (they can be a bit flimsy), the 205 GTI soon became a favourite with the motoring press and car buyers. Sometimes owners got a bit carried away and overcooked it on the bends, sometimes those who pranged the car had ‘borrowed' it without asking, but everyone who drove it reckoned the Pug was one of the best drives available - at any money.

In 1985 Peugeot's barking mad 205 T16 rally car won the World Rally Championship, and in 1986 the convertible 205 GTI went on sale, neatly badged the CTI. Peugeot where on the crest of a wave with their small hatch.

Things got even more fun - and more easily out of shape - when the 1.9 litre car arrived in January 1987, with 130bhp and disc brakes all round. So it wasn't overshadowed by its bigger brother, tweaks to the cylinder head and camshaft in 1987 meant power for the 1.6-litre car rose to 115bhp and in the following year a new dashboard was fitted with higher quality interior trim, including a leather-trimmed steering wheel.

In 1991 the CTI was fitted with the 1905cc engine and a catalytic converter. In 1992 catalytic converters had to be fitted to all cars to meet legislation, lowering the power output to 122bhp on the 1.9 car. At the same time anti lock brakes and air conditioning became an option. The 1.6 205 GTI bit the dust in August 1991, while its bigger brother lasted until April 1994, when the 205 range was replaced with the rather sedate and uninvolving 206.

Exterior

This 205 GTi is finished in stunning white paintwork, one of the best colour choices to be found on the now legendary hot hatch. The paintwork on this particular car is its original factory coat and remains untouched by anyone other than Peugeot themselves. Being original there are a few minor stone chips to be found, however the paintwork still retains a deep bright shine and looks stunning sat under our studio lights. In true GTi-style, red piping adorns the black bumpers and waist line mouldings around the car which all remain free from scratches or scuffs and still fit exactly as they should. On closer inspection there are some slight blemishes to the black trim however this does not detract from the cars overall excellent appearance. At the corners all the lights remain clear and free from any cracks or moisture.

Interior

Inside the GTi the interior theme is classic red on black, the half leather half cloth seats are showing very little signs of wear, the red patterned cloth base and seat backs are in excellent condition with no fraying or tears and the black leather bolsters have none of the usual wear, with all the red stitching completely intact. Sitting in the driver's seat you soon realise the 'like new' texture of the black dashboard and switch gear, every surface, switch and button remains free from wear, operating exactly as they should. The red 'GTI' badge is embossed in the centre of the steering wheel which also retains a wonderfully deep texture, along with the gearstick and handbrake all showing minimal wear. The grey carpet throughout the interior is clean and unmarked being protected by a set of fantastic red 205 GTI over-mats in the front foot-wells, complementing the retro charm of the interior perfectly.

Engine & Transmission

Being the desirable 1.9 engine and with only a mere 63k miles on the clock, this example still performs exactly as intended. The 5 speed manual gearbox which feels tight and precise with no play in the gear shift selector and the engine is in excellent mechanical condition, revving smoothly and feeling responsive.

Both the clutch and cambelt were replaced at 61k miles and the most recent service was undertaken just one month ago in November 2012 by Yeomans Peugeot main dealer at 63k miles.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
