Model History

The 944 was Porsche's mid range sports car positioned between the 924 and 911. It uses a rear-wheel drive water cooled 4 cylinder engine mounted at the front of the car while the gearbox is mounted at the rear providing better weight distribution which results in one of the best handling cars to come out of the 80's.

The aim of the car was to provide a luxurious long distance cruiser as well as an exciting powerful road car. Its body was based upon the 924 Carrera GT, like the 924 it has a sloping glass hatchback which provides a practical luggage storage area. The sunroof was a popular option as it was a removable metal panel providing a near Targa like open road experience.

The 944 was introduced for sale in 1982 and ran on for 10 years, it came in either a coupe 2+2 body or a very attractive Cabriolet. There were several models made but it's the Turbo that is featured here.

The Turbo was first introduced in 1986 and was given the Porsche internal number of 952. This had the turbocharged and inter-cooled version of the standard cars engine and power was increased to 220bhp. The 944 Turbo was the world's first production car to use a ceramic portliner to retain exhaust gas temperature. The Turbo also featured several other changes such as improved styling and aerodynamics, a strengthened gearbox with a different final drive ratio, standard external oil coolers for both the engine and transmission, standard 16 inch wheels and slightly stiffer suspension to handle the extra weight. More than thirty engine component changes where also made to compensate for the increased internal loads and heat.

Exterior

This stunning Turbo is finished in Alpine white which is a fantastic combination with the black leather. The car is very original and the only paintwork done was to the front end a few years ago to get rid of the stone chips. The paintwork is flawless with no dents or scratches and certainly no sign of any corrosion to the body or underside. All of the rubber seals remain in excellent condition and the electric sunroof lifts as it should and is easily removed for some open top motoring.

Interior

The interior really is perfect, there is no wear to any of the seats, the carpets look like new and none of the plastic trim has been damaged or scratched. The car is fitted with the expensive air conditioning option and all the electrics work exactly as they should. The boot is as new with the leather bag present to store the removable sunroof. There is a Blaupunkt Toronto CD/Mp3/ipod compatible headunit now fitted.

Engine & Transmission

This 944 Turbo has an excellent history file that demonstrates that it has been maintained to the highest standards throughout its life. The cambelt was replaced at a Porsche main dealer less than 7,000 miles ago and a new clutch was installed in July last year. The engine idles smoothly and delivers an exhilarating surge of acceleration as the turbo spins up. The gearbox feels exactly as it should and changes with the precision you expect from a Porsche.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

The car is fitted with the standard 16" Turbo alloys that are all in perfect condition without a single curb mark, they are all shod in high quality tyres that are only showing minimal wear. The car features disc brakes all round that are strong enough to keep the turbocharged power under control.

History File

The car has been serviced 12 times, 8 of which are Porsche main dealer and the others a well known Porsche specialists, the most recent service was carried out just a couple of months ago. There is also a folder that contains invoices for work that has been carried out to the car over recent years. The original Porsche document holder remains with the car that contains all the owners manuals and other documentation originally supplied with the car.
