Toyota Land Cruiser | £10,995
Mileage: 131,239Model History
In 1941 the Imperial Japanese Army occupied the Philippines, during this time they found a vehicle called a Bantam Mk II and promptly decided to ship it back to Japan. The Japanese government then asked Toyota to produce a light truck based on the Bantam for the Japanese military campaign. Toyota developed a ½ ton prototype called the AK10 in 1942. This never made it into production as the war came to an end but it's basis was the making of the Toyota Land Cruiser.
Development of the first generation Land Cruiser began in 1951 as Toyota's version of a Jeep-like vehicle and production started in 1954. The Land Cruiser's reliability and longevity has led to huge popularity across over 30 countries and especially in Australia where it is the best-selling full-size, body-on-frame, four-wheel drive vehicle. Toyota also extensively tests the Land Cruiser in the Australian outback - considered to be one of the toughest operating environments in both temperature and terrain.
The name "Land Cruiser" was created by the technical director Hanji Umehara. "In England we had another competitor - Land Rover. I had to come up with a name for our car that would not sound less dignified than those of our competitors. That is why I decided to call it 'Land Cruiser',"
In 1960 after two successful series the 20 Series was upgraded to the now classic 40 and produced in a range of body shapes - 2-door softtops, 2-door hardtops, 2-door pickup trucsk and 4-door station wagons. The Series 40 was produced between 1960 and 1984. Production techniques were modernized with the introduction of large-scale press equipment and changes were made in processes, such as the way panels were assembled. A LO range subgear was added to the transfer, which improved both acceleration and performance off road. The 40-series for the first time took on a 2-speed transfer with a LO range, so in addition to being able to switch from 2WD to 4WD, now you were also able to switch from HI to LO range
In 1965 global production surpassed 50,000 vehicles and the Land Cruiser was the best selling Toyota in the United States, In 1973 the 300,000th Land Cruiser was sold worldwide and in the same year the first diesel Land Cruiser was introduced for export on long wheelbase models with a six-cylinder H engine. 1980 the H diesel engine (HJ45) was replaced by the 4.0 L 2H engine (HJ47).
The Land Cruiser series is the longest running series in Toyota history. A timeline of production can be found here: LAND CRUISER TIMELINE
Equipment
Removable roof and fold down windscreen, Brush Bars, Pickup bed, Hi/Lo 4 wheel and 2 wheel drive, passenger grab handle, Passenger wing mirror.
Exterior
This HJ47 is in a strong and solid condition with no rust or rot on the chassis or cab. The large front brush bars have protected the front of the car from any damage. All the front panels line up well and the front wheel arches are straight with no signs of rust on the edges. Underneath it is equally clean with the cab showing its white paint and the chassis solid and black with only the faintest signs of discolouration on the leaf springs. The rear pickup bed is textured black on the inside with the outside of the bed showing a couple of marks on both sides and some light corrosion around the rear hinges.
Interior
The rugged interior of this Land Cruiser has stood the test of time well. The dark grey vinyl seats are in great condition with minimal wear and only a light scratch on the drivers side. The interior remains rust free and wholly original. The grey Toyota plastic floor carpet is still in place and in excellent condition as are the grey door cards. The original steering wheel is still in place with minimal wear defying its mileage.
Engine & Transmission
The HJ47 received a larger 4.0L straight 6 diesel engine producing 177ft-lbs of torque. The engine fires into life after a few cranks and chugs away with a familiar diesel workhorse note. The 4 speed gearbox lever sits next to the H2/H4 transfer box lever both slotting into geared positions with a solid and reassuring clunk.
Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
This Land Cruiser retains its stock wheels which are wrapped in Goodyear Light truck tyres with plenty of tread left on them.
History File
Sadly there is little history with the vehicle and it is the fabulous condition of this Cruiser that gives any clues to its past. Imported from South Africa the car has never been registered in the UK and remains on its SA plates and registration document.
