Model History

Throughout the years from the first incarnation as the E30, the M3 has become the benchmark vehicle against which most sporting saloons are compared. despite aggressive competition from Mercedes-AMG and the Audi quattros.

The fourth generation M3 was first announced in March 2007 at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland. Before its production BMW originally set out to name it the M4 along with the rest of the 3 Series range, however due to the interest in retaining the M3 line and its iconic status, this change was soon abandoned.

The inline 6 S54 engine in the previous E46 M3 was replaced with the S65B40 engine which is a naturally aspirated, 4-litre V8 that is based on the 5-litre S85B50 V10 that powered the E60/E61 M5 and the E63/E64 M6. It delivers 414 bhp at 8300 rpm. The engine comes straight from BMW's Formula 1 foundry in Landshut cast alongside the Sauber F1 teams powerplants. It uses a pair of oil pumps that feed lubricant between the engine's two sumps, a double Vanos valve-timing system which increases performance across the awesome 8400rpm rev-range, as well as a throttle butterfly for each individual cylinder to guarantee a fast, precise throttle response. The S65 Engine is also 15kg lighter than previous straight six found in the E46 M3 and has a ECU capable of 200 million calculations per second incorporating efficient Dynamics fuel saving and emissions reducing technology.

The suspension technology in the M3 was conceived from the very start for ultimate performance and was made using almost entirely aluminium, apart from a control arm it differed in every way to the standard 3 series set up. There was also a variable M differential used which features a torque-sensing lock that guarantees optimum traction in almost any condition.

Apart from the car's unique drivetrain and suspension technology, lightweight technology was crucial to the engineers at BMW M division. With the exception of the two doors, the bootlid and lights which were carried over from the 3 series coupe, it is a completely new design concept with all the other body components specially developed for the M3. The E92 also acquired a carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFP) roof which helped to lower centre of gravity similar to the one used on the E46 CSL.

Equipment

12 months BMW transferable warranty. Satellite navigation, Heated front seats, Electric memory seats, Parking distance control, Xenon lights, Air conditioning, Cruise control, Electronic damper control (EDC), Alarm system, Exterior mirror package, Child seat isofix attachment, Rain sensor, DVD player, Voice input system, Loudspeaker system, Brake energy regeneration.

Exterior

This M3 is finished in the Silverstone 2 metallic paintwork which looks superb. All of the paintwork is in good condition with very few imperfections, on close inspection there are some stone chips to be found on the front bumper and bonnet, unsurprising with this mileage and original paintwork. The high gloss black window surrounds are all in excellent order as is the carbon fibre roof which together with the darker wheels provides a striking contrast against the lighter paintwork.

Interior

On the inside the black leather seats feel very supportive and are in good condition with no marks or tears, the rear seats being especially tidy and unworn. The black carpets are clean throughout the car being protected by black BMW velour over mats which show no signs of wear, as is the black anthracite roof lining. The dashboard and centre console are in great condition with no fading or scratches, there are a few marks to the driver's door panel brushed aluminium trim but other than that all the panels and trim are in excellent order. The switchgear looks and feels like new with no wear whatsoever to any of the knobs and all of the electrics work as they should. Open the boot lid and you will find a clean grey carpet, under which is a BMW mobility set which includes an electric pump and a BMW first aid kit which is all still present.

Engine & Transmission

This M3 has been well maintained boasting a thorough and regular main dealer service history and comes with a transferable and comprehensive 12 months BMW warranty to cover any problems with the engine and transmission in the future that might occur. The engine fires up first time with its V8 roar and settles to a smooth idle with ease. Being a 6-speed manual gearbox the M3 feels tight and precise retaining the raw sports sensation a manual gearbox delivers with this sort of power.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

The 19" double-spoke M alloy wheels look fantastic in their dark grey matt finish and are in near perfect condition, complimenting the carbon fibre roof. There is only one light scuff to be found on the nearside front wheel. They are shod in matching Continental tyres. As expected on a car of this performance the brakes feel strong and confident bringing the car to a standstill quickly and smoothly.

History File

The M3 was first registered in March 2008 and delivered to Blue Bell Crewe BMW, it then had its important running in inspection at 1,073 miles. The service book is fully stamped up showing an excellent service record. There are a total of 6 stamps, 3 of which are from Blue Bell Crewe BMW and the remaining 3 were with main dealers, the last service was at Park Lane BMW just 40 miles ago. The car comes with a comprehensive 12 months BMW warranty that is transferable into the new owner name.

There are also MOT certificates and invoices present in the history file along with the original owners handbook complete with manuals and user guides.
