Model History

In September 1991 Mercedes-Benz introduced the E300 CE, a variant of the 124 series. The development was closely based on the coupe version sharing many of the same components. Each Cabriolet needed more than 130 kilograms of additional metal to structurally compensate for the 28 kilograms lost from the Coupe roof and to meet stringent safety standards. They were also fitted with four vibration absorbers to reduce the impact of scuttle shake, a common weak point of open top cars.

In 1993 the E300 was succeeded by the E320 with a 3.2-litre six-cylinder engine and four-valve technology which had the same power as the previous engine but achieved this at 900 rpm earlier than the 3.0-litre engine, maximum torque was considerably higher and noise emissions reduced.

The E320 also saw a stylistic change over the E300, the most obvious was the intergrated radiator grille which was redesigned after the S-Class with a narrower chrome surround with the Mercedes star placed on the bonnet. It also featured electronically extendable headrests that could be raised and lowered from both front and rear compartments. These also doubled as roll-over hoops and if un-extended in the event of an accident they would automatically be deployed in 0.3 seconds acting as a safety roll bar. The convertible roof stowed away under a roof cover leaving nothing visible above the body to disturb the sleek cabriolet lines. The fully retractable roof weighed 43 kilograms with 27 linkage parts and 34 joints, it only occupied 80 litres of space which meant that the car still retained a generous sized boot.

The E320 Cabriolet became a classic in its own right during its production and it has the potential to become a genuine piece of automotive history as its production period was fairly brief and the number of cars built relatively low.

Production of the E-Class Cabriolet ended in July 1997, it was the last of the 124 series to be produced.
