Model History

Designed and built as a grand tourer the SL was first introduced in 1954. The designation SL derives from the German Sport Lightweight and was first applied to the 300SL Gullwing.

The SL model range is still in production today and has spanned five generations of models from 1954 to the present day.

The R129 as featured here is the fourth generation of car and was built from 1989-2001. Featuring a shorter wheelbase and updated rear suspension over it predecessor the R107 (third generation SL) the R129 was quick to introduce model updates and featured a large amount of styling, mechanical and technological updates over its 12 year life span.

The R129 shot to the public's attention in 1991 when Diana, Princess of Wales sold her Jaguar to purchase a 500SL. This sparked a media storm as this was the first time a member of the royal family had chosen a foreign car. The media questioned whether British royalty should be driving foreign cars and eventually due to pressure she was forced to return the car to Mercedes-Benz in 1992. The car now features in the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

Exterior

The metallic green paintwork on this SL is in top condition with very few stone chips to the front of the car. It's quite a dark green that looks incredibly smart and really compliments the cream leather interior. The rest of the bodywork and trim remains in excellent undamaged condition. The factory hard top is included with the car and is again undamaged and in great condition.

Interior

The cream leather seats are clean and show no wear or any sagging to the bolsters. The polished wood trim is all umarked with a perfect shine. Built when the engineers were in charge at MB it is no surprise that the centre console gadgets, dash and switch gear is all still working perfectly. The cream carpets are still very clean and are protected with the correct Mercedes over-mats and the boot still houses the original alloy wheel and first-aid kit.

Engine & Transmission

With a fully stamped maintenance booklet, only 35,979 miles under its belt and a spotless engine bay you can tell this car has been well maintained all its life. The car rolls effortlessly through the country roads here at 4 Star accelerating smoothly and changing through the gears quietly, the gearbox making every effort not to disturb its driver or passengers.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

This SL has its original 16" Mercedes alloy wheels, they are all in good condition however some do show some minor curb marks. The tyres are matching Radial F107 which all have plenty of tread left on them. The brakes feel strong and precise pulling the car up in a straight and smooth line.

History File

This SL was first registered on the 16th of March 1995 and has stayed in the hands of its first owner ever since however there has recently been another name added to the V5 which was for a private plate transfer.

The car comes with a fully stamped service history, the first 4 services being carried out at Mercedes-Benz Geyfords, the 5th service was at Mercedes-Benz Brooklands and the most recent service was undertaken by a Mercedes specialist at 35,674 miles.
