Model History

The original Volkswagen Beetle spanned an incredible production period of 65 years from 1938 to 2003, over 21 million Beetles were produced in all.

The car was originally known as 'Kafer' the German word for "Beetle" and it was not until 1967 that Volkswagen themselves began using the name "Beetle" in marketing material, previously it had been known as the "Type 1".

In 1933 Ferdinand Porsche was commissioned to develop the 'Peoples cars', a car capable of transporting two adults and three children at 62mph. Initially called the Porsche Type 60 it morphed into the type 1 Beetle.

Not that we have tried it but the Beetles period advertising suggested it was nearly water tight and would float for a few minutes on the water!

The Beetle went about many upgrades in its life, the final evolution in 1971 known as the Super Beetle or VW 1302 and in 1973 the introduction of the VW 1303. The 1303 introduced a more aerodynamically curved windscreen due to US department of transportation regulations. This allowed for a redesigned dashboard, A 2-speed heater fan, higher rear mudguards and larger rear tail lights.

Production continued in Mexico until 2003 when the car no longer passed the ever tightening emission rules, these late cars benefited from fuel injected engines, improved interiors, automatic seat belts and front disk brakes.

Equipment

Front disk brakes, Automatic seat belts, Right side mirror, Metallic paint

Exterior

This Beetle has been part of a private collection from new and has never been driven on the road. The car remains in as new condition without a single mark on the paintwork or any damage or fading to any of the trim. It was ordered in the optional metallic silver.

Interior

As the car has never really been driven and always kept inside the interior is as fresh as the day it rolled of the production line and still has that new car smell when you open the door.

Engine & Transmission

The car has never been used on the road but the owner has always started the car on a regular basis and driven it up and down the drive to keep all the mechanical parts moving. He has had the oil and filter changed on a regular basis but has never had an official service.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

Other than making a few runs up and down the drive the car has hardly turned a wheel so the original tyres still have all their tread, there is no evidence of any perishing to the side walls or flat spots. The steel wheels are unmarked and the brakes allow the car to move freely.

History File

This Beetle is one of the last built and was imported in 2003, the car was then registered to be used on UK roads in 2004. The same owner has had the car from new but has never used it on the road as it has been part of his private collection. He has now decided to downscale the collection so the car is available for sale for the first time.
