BMW E28 M5 | £15,995
Mileage: 130,491Model History
Launched at the 1985 Amsterdam Motor Show the E28 M5 was the fastest production saloon car of its time.
Lurking under the bonnet and disguised by its subtle looks was the mighty M88 engine, a modified unit from the BMW M1 and the same engine BMW used in the M6s of the era. A product demanded by those looking for the performance of a sports car but the practicality of a saloon car the E28 M5 was the first of many incarnations utilising this combination.
Handbuilt by a special team of BMWs finest technicians early models started life in BMWs original Preussenstrasse location near BMW AG headquarters in Munich until in late 1986 when production was moved to the newly opened BMW Motorsport headquarters in Garching.
A mere 187 RHD M5s were produced from 3/86 to 11/87.
Equipment
De-chroming, Electric sliding sunroof, Rear-seat head restraints, 16" X-spoke alloy wheels, Graduated tinted screen, Rear window blind, Memory electric leather seats, Air conditioning, Electric mirrors, Rear M-tech spoiler, Rear sun-blind, Remote central locking with alarm, Pioneer CD player.
Exterior
The M5's styling was very subtle making it the ultimate Q car of the 80's, this example is finished in Diamond black with the factory de-chroming option. In 2005 the car was given to a well known body shop to give the paint a freshen up which included two new front wings, 6 years later the paint still looks excellent with no rust showing in any of the usual E28 weak spots. All of the external trim is in very good condition with no fading or scuffs.
Interior
Despite being able to see off most super cars in the 1980's the M5's interior is a very comfortable place to seat four adults for a long journey. The build quality is incredible and even after 25 years everything still feels tight and well screwed together. The leather shows little signs of its age with no wear to the bolsters and all the controls work as they should. The tool kit is still complete and all the carpets remain in good condition.
Engine & Transmission
This car has been meticulously maintained over the years by well known BMW Specialists so is in fine fettle. The all important timing chain has been replaced and the last service was carried out in June this year. Even by today's standards this is a very quick car and it still pins you into your seat as the revs build past 4,000rpm.
Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
The E28 M5 is fitted with 16" cross spoke alloys that allow for modern tyres. All the wheels are in excellent condition and have a matching set of tyres, two of which are brand new The brakes were fully overhauled in 2009 that included new calipers, discs and pads and as such work brilliantly pulling the car up quickly in a straight line.
History File
This E28 M5 was first registered in November 1986 and had its running in service done in January 1987. The early services where carried out at the dealer and since then it has been looked after by a couple of well known BMW Specialists.
The original service book is fully stamped up with all the services, a total of 34, the last being done in June of this year. There is also a folder that contains all the old service receipts detailing all the work that has been carried out. Almost all of the old MOT certificates have been kept and there are some photographs taken when the car had the paintwork done.
