Model History

The introduction of the C36 AMG in 1995 saw the first automobile to be modified by an external firm and sold officially as a Mercedes. The two companies signed a contract allowing AMG to use the worldwide dealer network used by Mercedes to market and sell their cars, this was and is still a huge success which led to Mercedes-Benz acquisition of AMG in 1998. Only 378 C36 AMGs were imported into the UK. With the C36, Mercedes had BMW firmly in their sights to counter the new six-cylinder M3.

 

The 3.6L, 4 valves/cylinder, inline six engine is based on the unit found in the C280, but with a increase in bore diameter and a huge 18.9 mm increase in stroke length. The electronic engine management was recalibrated to match the more aggressive camshafts fitted and the free-flowing exhaust. The result was 276 horsepower. 

 

To bring the C36 to a standstill it was fitted with 12.6" vented disc brakes up front and 10.9" units in the rear, providing excellent braking performance. The C36 was kitted out with power steering, central locking, retractable rear head restraints, anti-lock brakes and twin airbags as standard. Later models were also equipped with cruise control and other extras. It also had racing-tuned suspension (lowered by 25 mm). The top speed was electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

 

With the body work, AMG fitted a new front apron, new side skirts and rear apron, this reduced lift at motorway speeds making the handling even better at speed. It was also fitted with carbon-fibre trim on the B-pillar, an AMG decklidbadge, and 17-inch 5-spoke AMG monoblock wheels which would become synonymous with high performance Mercedes models.

 

Production halted in 1998 but Mercedes had shown the world that it was possible to tweak a standard formula for their entry level C class and end up with a sports classi

Exterior

This sensational C36 AMG is finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic which is the best combination with the black leather. It has been with the same careful owner from new and always kept garaged which has kept the paintwork in outstanding condition with only a couple of light stone chips to the front end. All the trim is in excellent condition with no marks or fading whatsoever. A first class example.

Interior

With sumptuous leather seats and door panels the interior looks as good as the day it left the factory, The original Mercedes over mats are still with the car and remain in excellent condition, the boot looks like it has never had anything in it and all tools remain. There is no wear to the steering wheel and the dashboard is unmarked. The roof cloth is immaculate and all window blinds and electrics are working as they should. It also had a period phone console professionally fitted in 1996.

Engine & Transmission

The C36 AMG has a full Mercedes service history so you can tell the car has been maintained to the highest standards and the current mileage is only 45,348. The engine is mechanically superb providing exhilarating acceleration and pulling through the gears with ease.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

Having had the 17" AMG alloys refurbished in 2002 they remain in as new condition and are shod in matching Pirelli P Zeros which show little sign of wear. The brakes are powerful and show minimal wear, they pull the car up quickly and smoothly.

History File

The C36 AMG was first registered in 1995 and has been with the same careful owner from new. All the services have been done at Mercedes main dealers and every invoice has been kept detailing exactly what work was carried out at each visit. The owner has also gone to the bother of keeping every MOT certificate and all the old tax disks. The original bill of sale is also present that includes an inventory for all the options fitted to this car.

 

The Mercedes leather document holder still holds all the original owners manuals and both keys come with the car.
