Model History

The E24 6 series was produced from 1976-1989 and was the replacement for the CS and CSL E9 coupes. Like the E9 coupes the early bodies of the 6 were manufactured by Karmann until production was moved in house by BMW. It was the proven E12 5 series that provided the chassis and much of the mechanicals for the E24. Dubbed the 'Bavarian Ferrari' the 6 series was a high end two door luxury sports coupe.

Production started with two models, the 630CS and the 633CSi. It was not until 1978 that the 635CSi was introduced featuring the fantastic 3.5L straight 6 engine. 1979 saw the end of the carburetted fuel systems in the E24s leaving all the straight 6 engines fed by computer controlled fuel injection.

The 3.5L engine was improved on again in 1982 when at the same time the model received an improved interior and slight exterior modifications.

To add to the luxury towards the end of production BMW introduced the 'Highline' in mid 1987. The Highline is considered the most desirable incarnation of the model however there is still a strong following for the previous chrome bumper model. Featuring what was probably close to a herd of cow, the interior of the Highline was covered in leather, includes hand-stitched nappa leather on the seats, door panels, center console, glove box, roof lining, sun visors, door pillars, upper door trim and dashboard. In addition to the leather covered interior the Highline also sported larger bumpers, wheel arches and colour coded door mirrors.

Exterior

This 6-series is finished in Lachs Silver which really shows of the elegant lines of the car. The paint finish is extremely good and there is no evidence of any rust in any of the usual E24 weak spots. You can tell that the car has spent most of its life garaged as none of the trim has perished or faded.

Interior

Being a Highline car this E24 has almost everything trimmed in nappa leather which has remained soft and supple. There is no wear to the bolsters on the sports seats and none of the trim has been scratched or damaged. All the electrics work as they should and the car still has its original over mats that remain in as new condition.

Engine & Transmission

This 6 has only covered 34,533 miles in the last 22 years so is hardly run in. The car has been regularly serviced and MOT'd every year despite the minimal mileage. This small amount of regular use is ideal to keep the many moving components lubricated and working preventing any problems that can occur with cars that are stored for extended periods of time.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

As with all Highline cars it is fitted with the cross spoke alloys that are all shod in the correct Michelin TRX tyres. The disks and pads are showing minimal wear and pull the car up in a nice straight line.

History File

This 635 was first sold in March 1989 by Diplocks Way BMW. It had its running in inspection done later that year by the same supplying dealer who then continued to service the car till 1996. Since then it has been serviced by a couple of different specialists and another BMW main dealer. Despite the low mileage the car has been service 12 times. The original service book has been kept and is fully stamped.

The car also comes with its original document holder that has all the owners manuals, most of the MOT certificates, old tax disks, spare keys, service receipts and the original specification sheet showing all the optional extra that came with the car.
