Model History

In direct opposition and in secret to the Volkswagen board, the 1968 Audi 100 was born. An instant commercial success this Audi was the first in the series of front engine water-cooled cars from the Volkswagen group famous for its rear engine air-cooled models.

The story goes like this - In 1965 Volkswagen purchased Auto Union (Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer) from Mercedes as demand for the Beetle had outstripped Volkswagen's production capacity - Auto Union had a nearly new production plant at Ingolstadt that was quickly converted for Beetle assembly.

With poor sales of the DKW F102 and the new Audi F103 failing to prove itself in the market the Volkswagen boss Heinrich Nordhoff in the belief that the rear engine air-cooled layout was the future gave orders that no further Auto Union models (incl Audi) be developed.

It was an engineer by the name of Ludwig Kraus that failed to share Nordhoffs view and set about in secret developing the Audi 100. The first Nordhoff learned about the the project was the presentation of a production ready prototype! Thankfully for Audi fans, Nordhoff gave it the thumbs up.

Shown to the press on 26th November 1968, the C1 platform Audi 100 was the company's largest car and spawned several variants, two and four door saloons and a fast back coupe. Named the 100 after the then engine output of 100ps it surpassed the sales expectations of Volkswagen to the extend additional production had to be set up at Volkswagen's own plant in Wolfsburg.

By 1971 the 500,000th Audi was produced making it the most successful model in the company's history at the time. The top of the range 100GL was introduced in 1972 and featured the 1.9L engine formerly used in only the Fastbback Coupe S.

Equipment

Radio/cassette player, Rear window demister, Dashboard clock, Audi mud flaps

Exterior

This 100GL is in lovely original condition. The metallic paintwork still has a deep shine and the vinyl roof is in excellent condition. The chrome work is clean and in good condition and all the plastic trim parts have aged well with no major damaged of fading. You can tell that the car has been very well cared for over its life as there are newspaper clippings in the history with the latest car cleaning products in the 1980's and receipts for having the paintwork sealed and under body rust protected.

Interior

It's remarkable that a 38 year old car with a cream cloth interior can have lasted this well. The dash is perfect with no cracks and the satin wood still looks as good as new, the seats look like they have hardly been sat in and there is no wear or staining to the cream carpets. The original Sharp radio cassette is still present and working with some chunky looking original speakers located on the rear parcel shelf.

Engine & Transmission

The car comes with an excellent history file so it is evident that the mechanics of this classic have been well cared for. Since arriving at 4 Star it has been thoroughly checked over and fully serviced and MOT'd by NBA sports cars in Dunsfold ensuring the engine and transmission are in fine fettle.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

The chrome centre caps are in great condition and the wheels are wrapped in nearly new B.F.Goodrich tyres all round. The brakes work well pulling the car up in a nice straight line.

History File

This Audi 100GL was first registered in May 1973 and had its 300 mile running in service done later that month. The same supplying dealer continued to service the car until 30,304 miles, all these services are stamped in the original service book. There is also a file containing most of the old MOT certificates from 1978, old service receipts and tax disks to further verify the low mileage of 38,393. Since arriving at 4 Star the car has had a full service at NBA Sports Cars.

Amazingly the original plastic document holder still remains with the service book, owners manual and service station guide.
