Model History

The E24 6 series was produced from 1976-1989 and was the replacement for the CS and CSL E9 coupes. Like the E9 coupes the early bodies of the 6 were manufactured by Karmann until production was moved in house by BMW. It was the proven E12 5 series that provided the chassis and much of the mechanicals for the E24. Dubbed the 'Bavarian Ferrari' the 6 series was a high end two door luxury sports coupe.

The original 630 CS was carbureted and had a 4 speed gearbox. 1979 saw the end of the non-injection fuel systems and the introduction of computer fuel injection. The 635 CSi was not produced till 1978, a couple of years after the introduction of the E24 chassis.

Exterior

This E24 is finished in the beautiful Sapphire blue metallic which looks very smart combined with the BMW Parchment leather interior. The current owner has done a fantastic job of preserving the car in its original condition, it has always been kept clean and tucked away in his integrated garage. We had a long chat with him when we collected the car. He informed us that he had first heard about the potential rust problems with the front wings back in the 80's so as a prevention he took the car in to have the insides wax oiled and has since paid particular attention to keep this area clean. This prevention has worked extremely well as there is not even a spec of rust. The rest of the car is also immaculate with no scratches or imperfections in the paint.

The stripes down the side are missing but the one on the front spoiler is not. We asked about this and he informed us that on delivery of the car he requested BMW remove them as he felt they spoilt the lines of the car. If required these stripes can still be purchased from BMW so we could have them reapplied to the car.

Interior

This E24 is trimmed in wonderfully soft parchment leather and due to the low mileage there is no obvious wear. The current owner had it well spec'd from new so its fitted with a Pioneer radio cassette, graphic equaliser and 4 speaker kit all of which still work well. Being an early car you will notice that its fitted with a slightly different dash with rather cool 70's looking dials, switches, a multi function computer with flashing green lights and door card more similar to the E9 coupe with the handles located under the arm rest. It still has its original dark brown BMW over mats that have been well preserved with another set of rubber mats!

You will notice that in the boot there is a grey boot floor carpet, this was purchased from BMW to protect the creme carpet underneath so if removed the boot looks like it has never had anything in it. The tool kit is also complete and still has the original BMW duster!

Engine & Transmission

The engine has had an easy life only covering an average of just over 1,000 miles per year. As you will see below it has been impeccably maintained and has never gone for long periods without use. The current owner has taken great pride in the upkeep of this car and has never scrimpt on anything it requires. It still starts on the turn of the key and provides great performance just as it did in 1981. The automatic gearbox glides through the gears and kicks down quickly when requested.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes

This E24 is fitted with its original bottle top alloy wheels that are all in excellent condition, the current owner informed us that they have never been refurbished so he has done extremely well to do 29 years of driving without ever clipping a curb! Its also a credit to him on how clean he must have kept them as there is no lacquer peel or discoloration to the paint. They are shod in the correct TRX tyres that all have plenty of tread and none of the usual sidewall cracks.

The brake calipers were overhauled in 2003 and refitted with new brake pads, they still provide strong braking and pull the car up in a nice straight line.

History File

This 635 CSi has only had one driver from new, a Mr Hugh Alexander, it was first registered into his company name in February 1981. The original bill of sale from the supplying dealer 'Coombs of Guildford' has been kept in the history file listing all the options that came with the car and the original purchase price of £19,948.89.

Coombs of Guildford serviced the car from new until 1986, all the receipts for these services have been kept and the book has been stamped. Mr Alexander then started using the BMW specialist 'Forge Garage' to look after the car from 1987 until 1993, at this point the car had done 29,390 miles, again he has kept all the receipts and had the service book stamped. For the last 16 years the car has been looked after and serviced by Hewitts in Wimbledon, the car has only done 4,000 miles in this period but has been serviced 8 times and had an MOT and check over every year, again every receipt has been kept and the service book has been stamped.

In 1992 Mr Alexander retired and the car was transferred from his company name into his own personal name, its easy to see that he has owned the car from new as his name is on the original bill of sale and all the service receipts.

Along with all the maintenance paperwork he has also kept every MOT certificate, every tax disk and all the original owners manuals kept in the BMW document holder.

The car currently has quite a valuable 5 digit plate that is available by negotiation.

We would be very surprised if there are many E24's with such low mileage, impeccable service history and only 1 driver from new.
