BMW M635 CSI MS | £31,995
Mileage: 78,288Model History
The E24 6 series was produced from 1976-1989 and was the replacement for the CS and CSL E9 coupes. Like the E9 coupes the early bodies of the 6 were manufactured by Karmann until production was moved in house by BMW. It was the proven E12 5 series that provided the chassis and much of the mechanicals for the E24. Dubbed the 'Bavarian Ferrari' the 6 series was a high end two door luxury sports coupe.
The original 630CS was carbureted and had a 4 speed gearbox. 1979 saw the end of the non-injection fuel systems and the introduction of computer fuel injection. The 635CSI was not produced till 1978, a couple of years after the introduction of the E24 chassis. The 3.5 engine was then improved on again in 1982 when the model received an improved interior and slight exterior modifications.
It wasn't until 1983 that BMWs motorsport division got their hands on the E24 and produced the mighty M635 CSi. The engine they decided to fit was a modified version of the M88/1 engine found in the BMW M1. This made the M635 CSi the second fastest BMW ever produced behind the M1, a title it still holds today due to the electronic limiters now in place on modern BMWs. Not only was the M635 incredibly quick but it launched BMW into the same market place as Porsche and Ferrari, combining power, style and presence into one exclusive package. The car featured a sports ZF gearbox (no auto option available), a limited slip differential, gas filled dampers and larger vented discs with 4 pot calipers on the front.
Just 524 RHD M635 CSis were produced between 1985 and 1989. To add to the luxury towards the end of production BMW introduced the Highline interior option in mid 1987. The Highline interior includes hand-stitched nappa leather on the seats, door panels, center console, glove box, roof lining, sun visors, door pillars, upper door trim and dashboard. There were only 102 RHD M635 CSi highlines produced making it a rare beast.
With so few cars produced owning an M635 CSi or Highline edition is special enough however BMW of Great Britian offered an even rarer special edition M635 CSi, labelled the 'Motorsport Edition'. Just 20 cars were consecutively produced from 18/10/1988 to 24/01/1989. These cars featured all the standard features of the M635 Highline model plus the shadow line exterior trim and M-lapels on the seats. Built in three special colour and trim combinations: Misano red (236) with black nappa highline leather upholstery, Nogaro silver (243) with black nappa highline upholstery and Macao blue (250) with Lotus white nappa highline upholstery. The Motorsport Edition was rumoured to have a slight increase in BHP to 292bhp however there is little information on this.

129 Motorsport Edition, De-chroming, Electric sliding sunroof, Highline equipment, Rear-seat head restraints, Interior headlight adjust, Graduated tinted screen, Rear window blind, Memory electric seats, Air conditioning, Electric mirrors, Rear spoiler. Remote central locking with alarm. Nakamichi in car Hi-Fi with cd disc changer, Reading light, Leather trimmed boot with M stitching, Leather trimmed steering wheel.
Exterior
Being a Motorsport edition it is finished in Nogaro silver (243). This car started competing in the BMW car club Concourse events from 1992 and in 1994 it was promoted to the Master Class. It has been Master class winner many times, peoples choice winner in 2006 and used as the bench mark judging car many times. If the car could talk I am sure it would have a huge well prepared acceptance speech to hand! As you might expect from a multiple concourse winner the paintwork is absolutely flawless, not even a single stone chip or blemish. The car literally looks as good as the day it rolled of the production line in 1989 and in fact is probably much cleaner. We can honestly say we have never seen a car detailed to this standard, underneath is spotless with even the diff case being polished, The saying is, you could eat your dinner off the underside! We now understand why the current owner wanted the car transported to the showroom on a trailer. This car really is a great credit to its meticulous current owner.
Interior
Climb into the drivers seat and the cabin surrounds you with lots and lots of supple black nappa leather topped with the special M-lapels on each seat. As with Highline cars the dash, doors and headlining are trimmed in leather, by special order through BMW this car also had the centre of the steering wheel and all of the boot trimmed in leather. The current owner has also installed a complete Nakamichi Hi-Fi system at a cost of £15,000 that sounds magnificent.
Engine & Transmission
This M635CSi has been meticulously maintained by its current owner for the last 19 years and always been serviced by BMW main dealers or by a private BMW master technician so its mechanically 100%. The engine bay is a work of art and we have no doubt a lot of cotton buds bit the dust for it to look this good!
Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
The car is fitted with the standard cross spoke alloys with Michelin TRX tyres, the alloys are unmarked and the tyres have plenty of tread. The car is fitted with grooved and vented discs with braided brake pipes all around.
History File
This M635CSi was first registered and purchased by its first owner in September 1989, had its running in service in January 1990 and continued to be serviced by the supplying main dealer until the car was sold to the current owner in 1991 with 38,000 miles on the clock. The current owner has continued with the BMW service schedule, with a total of 20 BMW stamps in the original service book, this is further backed up with a BMW print off showing the dates and mileage every time the car was taken in. The last BMW service was done in 2006 at 76k, since then it has been looked after privately by a BMW master technician. All the original owners manuals and sales brochures have been kept, along with all the old MOT certificates to further verify the mileage. The registration document shows an extra owner as the car was transferred into his wife's name for tax reasons between 1995 - 2004.
